Just about to build a new PC with SLI 7800GT's

1 CD rom drive and 1 HDD

The PSU I currently have is an 400W Q-Tec is that gonna be enough

To power it all?

In one word NO!

change that psu for a quality one.Q-tec are awful and you will blow your pc up!

Yup Q-tec psu's are awful.

I had one blow in my face (nice).

If you want a ncie decent psu but are on a budget then I highly reccomend the Hiper Type R modular.

I wouldn't use that PSU to spin a single fan, let alone an entire PC.

Was forced to use a QTEC 550W PSU before, and it blew, taking 2 HDD's, a motherboard and a GFX card (9800XT).

QTEC's are VILE, do NOT use them if you value your machine. I wouldn't force a QTEC onto someone I dislike, let alone my own PC.

EDIT: The hiper 580W modular's are good, and only (relatively) cheap too.

Powers my system (2x7800GT 512MB cards) fine.

What should i buy??

An Enermax 600w,Seasonic 600w,

don't skimp on the PSU Its the MOST important component in a pc.

I have never been a fan of hypers. There are better PSU's for not much more and this is money well spent in my view.

seasonic are supposed to be the best, but that obviously comes at a price. My Hipers served me well but if i had the choice again i'd probly go for the Tagan TG530-U15 530W or Enermax Liberty 500W.

Edit: I had a Qteq for over a year with no probs wotsoever! its in the bin now tho since i joined this forum :p

10 quid more than a hiper and better IMO.

Just one note, If you do happen to go for the Hiper it isn't actually SLI compliant. (or at least my 580w typre R wasn't).

It only has one pci-e connector although it does have the decent twin 12v rails etc.

I ran SLI'd 7800GTX's on it fine.

There are better PSU's out there although most cost more.

Better? In what way exactly? Its lower rated, lower amped rails, and there is no proof its any better at anything really.

I have witnessed enermax, antec and macron PSU's blow up, but that doesn't put me off them too much, just interested to know why its "better"?

just build quality etc...

The Enermax liberty oozes quality over the hipers IMO.

Ok chaps I have ordered the Seasonic S12 600W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply

Thanks for the help :)

not having used an enermax before but i believe that completely! Im abit wary of my hiper sometimes, when the pc's off and its finished its cool down one of the blue lights at the back stays on constantly as long as the powers switched on... it kinda flickers like a strobe

Good choice on the seasonic!

Really?

I found the plugs to be cruddy, and the quality of the cable braiding to be shoddy at best. The actual PSU does appear to be of sound quality though.

Thats just one of the leds flickering.

It also stays on (the back fan) for 5 minutes after turning off your pc to help cool it off.

I have never owned a enermax so I can't comment on the quality but my hiper is well made and feels quality.

Yeah but why must it flicker? When i turn my pc off i want everything to be off

Aside from that it does it job nicely so cant complain too much :)
