PC won't boot (and monitor doesn't come on from standby)

I agree.
PSU are very sensitive, and power down at the slightest fluctuation.
Luckily its a feature, and they reset after a few seconds.
Ive had the same thing happen on an Enermax when I had a loose pin in a fan connector.
It's easy to test a PSU with a DMM anyway rather than buying new.

not sure how to do that ... should the PSU be plugged in or switched off?

would I be just testing the main connector (that goes on the mobo) or each molex too?

Have a look here.

You may want to hook something up to it to create a load as well.

Had this happen to me 3 times with my P5N-E Sli board. Everytime it was a dead motherboard, exact same symptoms.

I'll bet it's a dead board with you too.

3 times with the same board! .. was it a manufacturing fault or something? How comes you stuck with the same board?

OCUK RMA'd my board pretty quick each time and even paid for my posting it back to them, I demanded this as postage came to £30 in total for the three times.

They got it back to me pretty quick each time, I assume it was a bad batch of boards, the first one went after working for about 15 seconds, the second died after working for a day, the third died after working for 3 months, the fourth one is still going 5 months later. Fingers crossed! :D
