Hello. A couple of days ago my PC just shut down no BSOD or nothing, so I turn it back on and the fans spin up and the lights are on and it just sits like that for a minute then it boots up. The same thing happened but now it wont boot at all. I was thinking maybe a PSU failure but if that was the case would the fans be able to spin up? Iv had my CPU for about 3 years and its been running at 3Ghz since new, could it have finally given up? I dont have another CPU to try and I dont want to start buying replacement parts unless I know for sure whats wrong. Any help greatly appreciated.

Yeah, its PSU.

I had this problem last year, everything spun up but nothing booted.

Do you have a spare PSU lying around, to test it?

Also, is it RMAable or out of warranty?

change your bios battery, trust me they can drive you nuts, they only cost 50p but ive almost gone and bought a psu and new graphics card because of the little blighters.

ive had 3 go and all gave me your symtoms!!!!

To be honest guys, so many things can cause these symptoms.
Old CMOS Battery, dying PSU, Fractured Motherboard, Short Circuit, Anything.

I'd try another PSU in there first though, or if you don't have a spare one, test the rails with a multimeter, try clearing CMOS. Check for short circuits.

Have you overclocked? The memory could be unstable. Unplug all of your fans and other devices which use up power (leaving essentials) and see if it boots.

Well I just tried another PSU and its still the same. I also replaced the CMOS battery with no luck. Could it be my CPU thats fried. I dont have another GPU to test that so Im kind of stuck:(

Possibly memory failure, what's your memory spec?
Have you done a process of elmimination?

You seem to have already ruled out your PSU and CMOS therefore leaves you with motherboard, memory and CPU. CPU Failure rates are fairly low, while memory is quite high.
Remove one stick of memory, then the other, then both, see if that works, swap them around in different slots etc, try one stick at a time, if possible try different memory.

Finding the problem is all down to ruling possible causes out.

Well I had already tried 1 stick of ram and no luck...BUT I then just put 1 stick in slot 3 and using the PSU I borrowed it posted, so I tried again with sticks in slot 1,2 and 3 and it refused to post again so it seems that somehow slots 1 and 2 are shot as it posts fine if I only use slots 3 and 4, also my PSU is shot. Any ideas why slots 1 and 2 seem to be buggered?

Well I just tested my own PSU using a multimeter and it "seems" fine. So I connected it all up again and let it sit for a while after sitting with the fans spinning eventually it booted up. Now considering that when I used a replacement PSU it booted straight away Im at a complete loss as to why it is acting up like this?????

i think it's gfx card, it would suggest why your getting power to everything else but not seeing a screen anymore? You tried a different monitor too, perhaps a different card.

Now considering that when I used a replacement PSU it booted straight away Im at a complete loss as to why it is acting up like this?????

Have you answered your own question?

EDIT: missed a bit, do you even hear it booting anymore?

As I said it has been posting now but only with 2 sticks of 1gb ram. One tick in slot 3 and one in slot 4. As soon as I try to use either slot 1 or 2 it refuses to post, but I just tried again using slot 1 or 2 and I get continous short beeps when I turn on am I right in saying that this is indeed a PSU error???

Well it seems its the Mobo thats stuffed after all. Just had someone test my PSU/GPU and they work no problems. Im now on the lookout for a new board. Im thinking of going SLI so can anyone recommend me a good cheap Socket 775 SLi board. I know 775's are as old as the hills now but I just need something to get me up and running again. Cheers
