What could it be guys?

It is a 4 core Intel or AMD although same for both i imagine?

Tried unplugging/plugging memory and power connectors. Tried swapping power cables and using different plugs but no joy.

Thinking psu as it has cobwebs inside case so guessing spider found it warm, climbed into psu and goosed it?

Basically short out any black and green wire on the 24pin ATX connector. Connect a fan first as some PSUs need a load.

I've got a 2in piece of insulated wire with the ends exposed for testing power supplies - works fine

think it's actually the graphics card.

took it out and booted it after mate said he had same issue and it booted up fine but obviously without a screen.

So graphics card next then see....

So which graphics card? 1gb 5450?

Needs to do nothing other than web work for nieces on internet and some crafting stuff so maybe a little bit of detail needed but no 3D work.

Swapped the GPU... and nothing...

Was an X1800XT but when I put the 5450 in it wouldn't boot - as soon as I put extra power onto it - nothing.

Got a 500w spare PSU from my bits and it booted fine! Working ok now although interesting temps!

6850 @ 3.00ghz @ 50-60C idle but 85C when running programs? But speedfan says all the 4 cores are 40C ish - it just says the CPU at 85c+

Should I reseat? Seems to be ok....

You said there wer cobwebs inside your case :) Have you checked the CPU heatsink to see if it is caked in dust? Give it a thorough clean with compressed air (or just take it outside and blow sharply into all the heatsinks and fans if you don't mind getting a dusty face and clothes lol)
