I installed a new gfx card today, it worked fine for around an hour before my computer shut down instantaniously. Now the computer won't boot.
When the power button is pressed I get a red light and the fans do a half rotation and stop. I tried removing the gfx card and I get the same problem.
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction, the power supply is 650w so should be sufficiently powerfull enough to power the card.

For reference my pc is:

AMD dual core 7750 Black
4gb ram
650w power supply
500 gb Hard drive
ATI Radeon 4870
Biostar gf8100 motherboard

Any help would be appreciated.

No Blue screen, it just died without warning. PSU is an "alphapower" 650w (cheap thing came with computer).
I suspect it is the power supply, but it seems to try and start with the fan movement and the red light...I would just like some assurance to what it is before I buy a power supply only to find out my mobo is screwed.

I would suspect the PSU.The 4870 is a power hungry card, and I doubt a 650w PSU that retails for £15 would be good enough.

+1.I don't think that a 15 pounds 650W PSU would really deliver that amount of power.IMO I think the GPU overloaded it and thus making it die.

real psu's quote rated continuous load, cheap psu's quote maximum burst load which they can handle for a few seconds. It's rather like comparing a 1000W "music centre" with a 100W RMS Hifi amplifier. One is being honest about its power output, the other while "legally" correct is measured in such a way that the number is meaningless.

As everyone else said it is probably the PSU. Try to spend a decent amount on a PSU as you would not want it taking all your gear with it when it blows. This may seem a lot but IMO it is worth it.

Now I know that cheap PSUs are rarely good, but I believe that really they're cheap because you have a 50/50 chance of getting an ok one. My mate (who plays games for hours and hours every day) runs his Phenom II and a 4850 off a 550W WinPower and has been doing since around August 2009!!  (and before that he was running the same rig but with an overclocked X2 3800+)

Same thing happened to mine, same thing with the fans coming half on and the red light on the mobo, PSU just blew 1 night after I left my PC in standby, strange.

The reason your fans "half spin" is probably because the PSU has some charge left in it from when it was fully operational, if it's drained then it'll just be a lump and the fans won't even half turn anymore.

Get a nice Corsair PSU :)

ive had simlar problem as well but just went nothing new installed but was psu that caused it replaced it and all good again....my daughters pc it was on not mine by the way lol

Thanks guys, that makes me feel more comfortable about buying a new psu. What wattage would you suggest? I really dont want to spend huge amounts of money, since the computer cost me <£200 (ebay auction brand new) and the card only cost £100...
