My pc has worked since building it (at least 12 months) with only two minor problems before

problem one
twice it has failed to start before but i waited 15-20 mins and it started like normal and the problem didnt return for a few months

problem two
every few weeks something in my pc sounds like it is hitting a fan blade
if i open the pc and look around there is nothing close to any blade
and if i reboot the noise dissappears and at all times the blades appear to spin normal

My current pc is

GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEL38GB1600C9DC)
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail
Samsung 250GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD250BW)
Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEL38GB1600C9DC)
Be Quiet! Shadow Rock Pro SR1 CPU Cooler
MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

last night i was using this pc and everything appeared normal and this morning the pc it failed to boot up
i noticed it was rebooting constantly

i waited 20 mins like i did before and the problem was still here
i then tried it every 20-30 mins over the next two hours but the problem appeared to be more major than before

i opened the pc and did the following
1/ removed keyboard mouse and anything else attached to the pc retry booting
2/removed hdd ssd and cd rom retry booting
3/removed usb case speaker wires and anything else attached to motherboard retry booting(except for power switch and reset swich )
4/ removed sound card retry booting
5/ removed ram tried each stick seperatly retry booting
6/removed graphics card

it booted(or appeared to do so as it didnt reboot) and was stable

i was in luck i had my old graphics card as the msi r9 290 was only purchased at xmas

i put my old 5850 back into my pc and the booting error came back

i took battery out of comos waited 5 mins reput battery back in

tried a graphics card and it just kept rebooting

the pc motherboard has onboard graphics but when i tried to use them i couldnt get any output to the monitor

it appears the pc becomes stable with no graphics card but constant reboots when I install a graphics card (ive now tried two graphics cards )

atm i have hsf cpu motherboard, power supply and it appears to boot up
anyone with any idea how to fix it or what the problem is

I had a similar problem with an MSI motherboard, after several weeks of head scratching I discovered I had some how damaged the back of the mother board. Might be worth checking

so after last night i had a idea

i plugged a single stick of ram in the m/board and used the onboard graphics

i then have tried 3 times and the pc booted each time (to bios )

but (and its a big but)

ive noticed that sometimes when i press the power it appears to do a single reboot then boots

or the power button wont work straight away and you need to press it two or three times

im having a feeling the power supply is faulty in some way(im also wondering if its the case buttons ? maybe reset is always pressed or somthing

ive also noticed the back of the power supply when i plug the power lead in the socket its a little wobbly and not solid

now i have it booting i shall try running it longer then reboot when its warm to see if the problem comes back

the crazy thing is ive not touched the pc other than put in a ram stick and the pc now boots

which is whats making me think power supply if it continues to boot i shall try a graphics card next as the power needed will be bigger

So since this morning
I put a graphics card in and since then i cant stop the pc from rebooting no matter if i use the onboard grafhics or not

Which is strange because it booted all the time this morning without the graphice card

And the only thing ive done is put the graphics card in and out

So im either thinking

1/ either powersupply
2/ motherboard snaped pcb or faulty

I know it pointing to motherboard but i am just getting a feeling its power as the computer wouldnt even turn on for a while

Atm i am resetting the comos. And then trying without a graphics card

Sorry for spelling as i am using a mobile to type this

If there's a problem with the graphics card, then it will cause continual reboots. It's how I found out my old card was dead.

However, given that you've tried another card that definitely works, I'd say you're right in thinking PSU or motherboard.

What PSU is it?

Its a old power supply its the oldest thing in my PC

Its a be quiet 600 or 650 w dark power

Its got to be 4 years old maybe more

Plus the PC is still rebooting without a graphics card installed

Tomorrow I will take everything out of the case and build it on the kitchen table

I'm also wondering about the power switch in the case

Any one know if you can swap the power and reset around just to test the switches

As in are they both push to make/break

I have a antec 1200

I've noticed that some times the PC will reboot and as its 3-5 secs it might be power switch being held on

I also have a spare hsf. I will just attach the fan to the header to check its not the fan running slow or a faulty fan.

And will look for a speaker for the m/board as I don't have one in case there is any warning

Disconnect the power switch and reset switch, be careful and briefly touch the two prongs for the power on switch (at the headers) with a screwdriver or loop of wire (careful not to touch anything else).

The sound you hear like a wire hitting a fan blade could be the HDD arm? quickly returning to its default position as I've heard that noise before and it was a pretty similar situation really...the on button jammed in on my sons Xigmatec alfar case.
Worth a shot anyway for the sake of 5 mins.

K overnight in took the battery out. This morning I put it back in and both sticks of ram
I also attached the HDD CD ROM ectr
And used one onboard graphics out put

It posted to windows

Thinking I will attach a 2nd monitor. I turned my pc so it was standing because wires didn't reach attached the secound output to my other monitor and the PC kept resetting
Even if I remove the 2nd monitor output

I've noticed if I don't reset the Como's no matter what I do it keeps resetting

But I have to remove battery and power from the power supply and wait at least 5 mins

Then. It appears to do something new

Its almost as if some input is being held on until you turn the power off and reset the BIOS

Can I not use the reset switch as my power switch just change the header

I'm going to try just disconnecting the power for 5 mins and not resetting the Comos
And using just one monitor output

I've noticed my power supply keeps spinning for 5 mins after you power down as a safety feature

I'm thinking if this works. Its power supply holding a input high many some safety feature broken on power supply

K just done this
After trying with two monitors I unplugged one monitor
And it still wouldn't post
No matter if I left power out or not

I took battery out waited 5 mins and it posted with one monitor and on board graphics

I pressed power switch for 4 secs to power down

After 30 secs I pressed power switch again didn't move PC or change any components

It did a quick 1-2 secs reset then now dose a reset all the time

And I have a feeling won't boot until I reset the Comos again

I've also noticed the reset is different times maybe one sec. All the way up to 5 secs

Ok update

I purchased a power supply and installed it at first the pc wouldnt even power on

thinking its was the motherboard i decided to give it one last try it suddenly sparked into life

first it said the bios was corrupted and as the motherboard is dual bios it went into a process of self repair

turned off and on again and suddenly it came on all working

Im still not sure if it was the power supply or a corrupted motherboard but one thing my pc sounds really, really, quiet

and its now working booting everytime first time

so fingers crossed problem has been resolved
