PC won't boot - no signal to monitor or peripherals

Hi all,

I've had my current setup for a long time:

  • MSI B450M Mortar AM4 mATX motherboard
  • Ryzen 2600X CPU
  • RTX 2060 GPU
  • 16gb DDR43200 Corsair Vengeance RAM
  • Corsair 700W PSU

I only really turn it on once every other week though now that I have a child, it's been working absolutely fine. However, I turned it on the other day and nothing came on the monitor and I noticed my wireless peripherals weren't connecting (meaning it wasn't getting to Windows). I can't see BIOS or anything, the monitor doesn't detect a connection. The fans and case lighting etc get going though when I do turn it on, so it's not completely dead. I also noticed the fans stay quite high speed (then lower after BIOS usually).
So far I've tried ...

  1. Trying a HDMI cable instead of the DP cable to the GPU (the monitor works fine, it works happily via HDMI to my work laptop)
  2. Tried removing the GPU and plugging the HDMI into the motherboard's HDMI socket (though this may not work as my CPU isn't a compatible CPU?)
Can anyone else recommend anything? I was going to try and clear the CMOS though I don't have a jumper so will need to order one

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

You wouldn't get anything from plugging the HDMI lead into your motherboard as your cpu doesn't have onboard graphics.

You don't need a jumper to clear cmos. You can either bridge the two clear cmos pins with a screwdriver which is exactly what a jumper does or you can remove the battery for ten minutes or so. A dead or dying CR2032 battery can do all sorts of weird things so it may be worth changing it if it hasn't been done for a while. While the battery is out double check your power connectors are firmly plugged in and have a try reseating the grphics card in it's pci-e slot. It's also worth trying the card in another slot to rule out a dead pci-e slot. Try booting the board with a single stick of memory and a single drive attached. I don't suppose you have a spare psu you could try? If all that fails I guess it's either a dead mobo (more likely) or cpu but you would need access to another pc on AM4 to verify that.

Thanks for the advice. Clearing CMOS do I need to completely unplug the system, then bridge the 2 pins and then plug it back in? Or does it need to be off but with the PSU on for it to work? The instructions for the motherboard aren't quite clear.
Thanks

I took a look online and cleared the CMOS. I still get nothing on screen but the fans do slow down after a few seconds, which sounded promising.
I noticed now that the EZ Debug LED on the motherboard has a red light for VGA. So I assume it's my GPU that's possibly broken or failing somehow :(

@Ginjarou Any update on this bud?
I tried changing the PSU's cable to the card and also plugging the PC in directly to the wall (not using an extension cable). Unfortunately this didn't change anything, still getting the red VGA light on EZ-DEBUG. :(

I was going to try and move the GPU to the other PCI slot, but the power button cables for my case and in a thick cable and I couldn't physically get the card in (i'm also using a mATX motherboard so it's a little difficult).

The only option I have now is to send my GPU to a friend to try in their PC, just to see if it's this GPU itself that isn't working.

Just to add, I can see the fans on the GPU spinning, so it has power, it's just the motherboard has decided not to like it I guess.

To also ask, if I bought a really cheap budget graphics card like this. Could this work with my motherboard? Just before I buy it for testing purposes. My knowledge of PCI-E slots, old and new graphics cards and such is next to nothing.
Cheers.

Ideally you want them to be UEFI compatible for a cheap test card, my go-to is usually R5 230.

Update. The R5 230 came, I've put it in but still the red light for VGA in EZ-Debug and I still can't see anything on screen :(
I also tried it in the second PCI slot (as it's not a massive as my RTX 2060 and can fit), still the same.

I tried clearing CMOS just in case, still no luck.

So it seems it could be the motherboard that's the problem? I'm about to send my RTX 2060 to a friend just to check that it's definitely not that.

It does look like the motherboard but did you try clearing the CMOS?

Yes, as I don't have a jumper I tried clearing via the screwdriver trick and also removing the battery for 10 seconds. Still no luck :(

I'm thinking of selling everything and getting a gaming laptop instead (life making it difficult for desktop gaming at the moment), so whoever reports back to me about one of these things not working is how I'll figure out what isn't working after all
