I recently took my GPU out to reapply thermal paste compund, after placing my graphics card in the PCI Slot. I powered on without realising that I had forgotten to connect power to my GPU.

My PC made a beeping sound and I quickly switched it off.
Plugged 2x 8pin power to the GPU and tried turning on the PC again.

The PC just does not power on anymore. I tried to power on without the GPU but still nothing. The LEDs on the Motherboard do come on but it just doesn't power up.

Anyway to sort this out.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you've shorted out your power supply somehow, though I'm not sure why leaving two 8pins would short it, unless they somehow made contact with something.

You could try clearing the CMOS, as there is some power getting to the board but I'd bank on needing to replace your power supply.

It doesn't even get to that stage. the computer doesn't even turn on anymore.

I took out the graphics card and tried precisely what you mention but it wont turn on at all.

I forget to plug them in all the time bud, its never dmged my system, and im running 2 hungry cards. I just get error beeps and no display.

Check all your cables are plugged in properly, check you put your heatsync back on properly after you applied the paste.

Like cobra says if you have onboard graphics try that.

You didnt try connecting anything while it was powered on still did ya?

After further investigation one of the little heatsinks seem to have fallen off and is currently lying at the bottom of the case

Could it have hit something on the motherboard on its way down and caused the PSU or motherboard to go out?

I did the exact same thing with my old PC which I am donating to a friend, I cleaned the inside out of 6 years worth of Dust, put it all back together but forgot to plug in the PCI 6 pin power to the GTX650.
A day later when I decided to remove all the programs (and porn lol) I powered it up and all I heard was a fan going mental with no output to the monitor, whipped the side panel off and noticed I had not plugged the 6 pin power in.
My first thought was ****, I've fried the GFX card, shut it down, plugged it in and it booted in to windows fine.

I doubt very much your PSU is dead I'm afraid :( A switching PSU will not blow because the extra power to the GFX was not plugged in. The PSU will only draw and power whats plugged in It does sound like the MB.

If a heatsink fell off and hit the board there's a good chance you have short circuited a component by bridging them with the heatsink when you powered up.

Not what you wanted to hear I know
