I've just purchased another 2 x 1gb sticks of Geil memory to go with the 2 x 1gb sticks i already had in my machine, unfortunately it wont boot with all 4 sticks of memory in it but it will boot with just 3 of them in it.....

Anyone got any ideas why that might be ?

The motherboard is an Asus P5N-E Sli, the CPU is a dual core E6600 and i'm using Vista 32bit...

Any help much appreciated o/

Double check that the RAM voltage is set to the RAM manufacturer's recommendation in the BIOS. It might be undervolting with the power load of all four modules.

Mine works fine from the get go. Try updating BIOS. Does it actually POST the memory or does it simply not boot?

0608 BIOS worked for me. the 07 ruined my mouse!

As Billy suggests.

The ram will automatically default at 1.8v

Via Bios set ram timings and set memory voltage to 2.1v

I tried setting volatge to 2.1 and putting all 4 x 1gb sticks in and this time it did make it as far as the boot screen but it froze as soon as it tried to detect the memory :(

Looks like i'm stuck with the three sticks !

What speed does the board say it supports 4Gb at.

My P5WS64Pro supports 8Gb but only at DDR2-533, if you want gauranteed 8Gb then you have to drop the memory speed. It will run DDR2-800 but not 8Gb of it.

Maybe your board is similar and you need to drop the speed of the RAM to get 4Gb.

No none of the sticks are faulty, i've tried them all in various configs and no matter what i try it will only boot with three installed :|

I'm only trying to install 4gb ddr2, board says it supports up to 8gb ddr2, all 4 slots should be useable, all the memory sticks i have are identical, so i'm now completely stumped, looks like i'll just have to stick with three and i've got a spare :/

have you tried this:

1)Place 1 module into dimm slot 4 (nearst the cpu)

2) Boot in to windows change Bios settings.

3) set ram voltage and timings.

Boot into windows

4) Power down

5) replace the 3 modules.

See if that works

if that doesnt work try this

Manually set timings to 4-4-4-15@2T

set memory voltage to 2.085V and North Bridge to 1.4v

Thanks for this, I upgraded my PC yesterday and for the life of me could not work out why it wouldn't POST with 4 sticks of Corsair 512k TwinX DDR2 memory installed but would work with 2 sticks fine, your solution worked great.

Your welcome, good to hear your system is up and running:)

the only way to get 4 sticks of memory working with the p5ne-sli is by updating the bios to at least 0608 or set the memory speed to 667. older version bios's have issues running 4gb (4x1gb's) at 800mhz. hope this helps

I'm bizarrely stuck in the same situation. I thought that I'd just randomly had a faulty fourth socket failure, as all the sticks worked in other slots, but not the fourth one.

Turns out might be a weird issue here. What motherboards are you using?
