PC won't connect?

Hi all.

I'm trying to get a friend's pc to connect to the internet. He is (still) using a dial up modem, 56kb one. Now, it dials out and all, which is fine then at the botton says its connected at 50Kb or so. So I was like okay, cool we're on!

Not so, Outlook express. I.E and FireFox all can't get on any website at all or download emails. I've tried almost everything I can think of, still no joy.

Anyone got any ideas?

He is running, Windows XP Professional.

May be something to do with the LAN settings......un-tick all the boxes and see if that works TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>CONNECTIONS>LAN SETTINGS

Have you configured the applications to use the dialup connection?
If you open a command prompt and try pinging his ISP or www.microsoft.com (say), what happens?
