PC wont get past "verifying dmi pool data"

Ok, so my computer has been dying in various ways for a while now, but I simply cannot afford to replace it at the moment. It's latest death spasm, has thus far been one that I am unable to overcome.

Basically, it POSTs, recognises the right hardware, moves to the next screen, the one with "verifying dmi pool data", and never gets any further than that. What is interesting about this screen, is that a couple of characters disappear from it... A few of the lines drawn with text have single character gaps in them, and the "i" in the primary slave "disk" disappears.

This is really getting beyond my ability to troubleshoot a situation... I've removed all IDE devices save the boot device, swapped out memory sticks, blah blah.

Before this happened, my computer was at a weird state where to get it to boot into windows, I had to boot into safe mode, install a driver or something, restart and go to "last known good configuration". Anything except doing this would freeze the progress bar as windows loaded (ie, last known good config wouldn't work without messing with drivers in safe mode first...)

System Specs:
WindowsXP sp3
AMD dual Athlon MP 2800+
GA-7DPXDW-P
2gb ram
Ati Radeon 9800

So, does anyone have any ideas? Messed up motherboard perhaps?

Reset the BIOS to default settings if you haven't already. Unplug all but absolute essentials, and disable everything you don't need in the BIOS. Then enable things again one by one. It'll take a while but you might find the source of your problem. Also perhaps try another GFX if you have one. Check the mobo for blown or leaky capacitors too, these are a common failing in a lot of mobos.

Alex, I started doing that, but haven't taken it the whole route yet, I'll get onto it. I had serious problems with my last graphics card too, I only swapped in a new one a couple of weeks ago, maybe it could be something to do with a horrible AGP pro slot.

Delvis, Nothing changed. Last night it was working fine (in that once I got it booted it worked for ages). Actually, it froze after selecting safe-mode, with the white progress bar on the same screen which it shouldn't be, so maybe it managed to rape itself into not booting at all with this failed start. Hmm.

Ok, so I'm pretty sure it's the hard drive.

I went into the recovery console and ran FixMBR and now when it boots some of the character spaces change colour, from being the standard dos white on black to little squares where it's green on red, or grey or green, and even one of the squares is flashing between purple and a dithered purple and orange... It's totally weird.

Could this have anything to do with the graphics card as well, or is it just the most random error symptoms ever?

I think I'm going to install windows on another HDD, clearing the data off it now, it'd be nice if anyone has any other encouraging words of if they can tell me I'm doing the wrong thing!

Thanks for reading.
