Hi all,

My current system:

Cooler Master CM Stacker + Cross Flow Fan
Silver Stone Zues 750W psu
ASUS A8R32 MVP DELUXE CROSSFIRE READY SOCKET 939
AMD 64 Dual Core 4800+
2GIG OCZ Platinum RAM
ATI Radeon - X1900 + X1900XTX (Crossfire)
Dell 2405fpw 24" monitor

W&D 500GIG SATA
Saitek keyboard
Logitech G5 Mouse

WinXp Home (sp2)

Well i got home today , went to turn on the PC , and all that is happening is the fans are just coming on , no post , or graphics (display)

i've taken the graphics cards out (both) and tried them seperate and nothing , taken the ram out , and nothing, and on an off chance had a look at the psu , but its all fine no burn marks.

imo think the motheroard has gone.

i cant test any parts as i have no 2nd computer + my friends dont have this spec ...

Did you leave your PC on last night? Check out my thread mate; exact same thing happend to me. I live near Lewes so close to you.

I wonder how many PCs that storm has taken out!

yeah , i do believe it was the thunder yesturday! hmmm i've not tried the Cmos battery :P though i really dont think that will help

I didn't hold out much hope either ;) It's worth a shot I guess.

If you manage to test any of the components let me know mate. I'm concerned about putting anything from my current PC into anything new. I'm quite sure it won't do any damage but it's a lame risk to take.

Well if i get a new motheroard im going to have to use the parts that i have anyway.

I've been doing a bit of reading about this. Even if your PC was turned off I do believe it would have still been vulnerable to spikes plus a surge protector isn't capable of taking hits from spikes. Unfortunately it seems common that the motherboard takes quite a few components with her (HDD kept coming up). Still can't find much about using components from a spiked PC. Everything I have read hasn't been positive though :(

Bump! I really need to know so I can order my new rig. I can knock 70 quid off the build if I can reuse my DVD drive and HDD.

Edit

Urgh I'm sick of searching google for this ****. The answer cannot be found. I hear about static build up happening which obviously means you can't reuse them but it's just randoms on Yahoo! answers so hardly a credible source. I need a definite answer.

Since the fans come on that means you are getting 12 volts (or one of the 12 volts rails), but maybe no 5v or 3.3 from the PSU. These supplies are used by the motherboard. If it was caused by a lightning surge the PSU is likely to be the only failure.

I would try another PSU, or one of those plug in PSU testers to see if all the supplies are there.

It's unlikely that you've lost everything, so even if the motherboard is toast I would guess the CPU/memory/Gfx and drives are OK. Of course a skt 939 Crossfire board will not be easy to replace, so you will be looking at motherboard, CPU and memory at least.

Well the LED on the motherboard = Green

PSU LED = Green and works power to fans , and HDD (as far as i can tell)

it seems there isnt anything else , so imo think its the processor or something not right with the motherboard.

Hi mate,

The fact it doesn't POST does suggest a dead mobo. If it was just the CPU or something then you'd get the relevant POST error message. Basically what is happening with mine but I can get her to POST if I remove the RAM.

Can you use a mate's rig to test the components? I just got back from my mate's house where I tested my HDD and optical drives. No damage done so no need to worry about that :)
