Hi all, built a new PC recently and all has been fine. Then the other night its decided not to shut down anymore?

I go start > click the little arrow > shut down.

It goes windows is shutting down, the monitor goes off and then into sleep mode. The keyboard turns off (i can't make the num lock led come on) but the pc just stays turned on and won't power off. To turn it off i have to do a hard shut down by holding in the power button

Using vista home prem 64bit. Any ideas?

I had this problem after I first installed Vista, it was to do with some of my startup programmes not shutting down properly. It's fairly common. Unfortunately if it's a new build it's quite hard to work out WHICH programme as they're all newly installed.

Try running msconfig.exe and turning off all startup programmes and rebooting. If the problem goes away with no start up problems then the cause is as I described. Sadly you'll have to turn back on each programme one after the other and reboot to work out which is the actual cause.

Oh dear, ok mate i will try that and see what happens.

If anybody else has any ideas please let me know!

edit: the only start up programs i have running (that i know of) are live messanger, avg and audio manager!

I tried that, the monitor etc turned off (well the monitor LED just kept flashing) but the PC stayed powered on?

What happens if you just jab the power button on the PC?

You might want to double check your BIOS power settings too.

I jabbed the power button and the same thing happens, monitor/kb/mouse turn off, pc stays on with fans etc

It's as if it is going into sleep mode then not waking up????

Had a play with vistas 'power options' in control panel.

In balanced mode:

If i set 'power options and lid' power button to 'do nothing', then nothing happens if i jab the power button, HOWEVER if i set it to 'SHUT DOWN' then it seems to go into sleep mode instead of shutting down?? I cannot get it out off sleep mode either without a hard reset

I just did that mate, same thing happened, i couldn't bring the PC out of the 'state' that it was in.

Had to press the reset button.

You've probably done this but if you haven't it might be worth checking your motherboard website for the latest bios. You don't mention what motherboard you have which is fine as I wouldn't be able to give you a definitive answer anyway. However when I updated my bios the other week I saw in the change log that a bug with exact same symptoms as you mentioned under certain configurations and Windows Vista had been fixed.

Its a gigabyte m61pme-s2

I did the bios update and it's the same :(

Would it be worth reinstalling vista?
How many times i can reinstall vista 64 home prem oem version on this pc?

Could it not be shutting down because i could have missed something when building the system, e.g somebody plugging onto the motherboard?

1/reinstalling windows always worth a shot, as it occasionally just fails to install properly

2/if you'd plugged things into the wrong place/not plugged things in I'd expect it to fail to turn on rather than fail to turn off. It might be worth checking you've connected the front panel connectors to the right pins on the motherboard, otherwise hardware is (probably) fine

Mines a gigabyte as well and as said there was an updated bios for this problem for my board. Might be worth going to gigabyte and sending a webnote about you're problem and seeing what they say. If my board can have this issue and have it resolved by a bios update its not beyond the realms of possibility that gigabyte could provide you with an updated bios to try.

Ok i've reinstalled vista and something strange has happened. I am on a fresh install (no updates, av or anything) and when i shut down this time it does the same, apart from the monitor stays black but has a white flashing line in the top left corner, much the same as if you were in cmd...??

PC still doesn't shut down, it seems to turn vista off then leave the pc on :s

Mine does this every so often. However I haven't been able to sort it out either. Although it didn't do it on a few of my previous reinstalls, try another reinstall, it's the only thing I can think of.
