Hi guys,

Working on my friends' parents ancient computer, and it won't power on at all. I'm pretty sure it's a knackered motherboard but I thought I'd ask here incase I have missed something.

The motherboard has a light come on but the original power supply makes a squealing noise just plugging in the kettle lead, so I tried another power supply which I know works. Still did not start up. Tried replacing the power switch with the reset switch, still does not turn it on. Tried reseating all the connectors, the ram, the processor, tried another processor but still no luck. No beeps or anything.

Any confirmation on the mobo be dead would be most helpful.
Specs are

Socket 478 Pentium 4 1.8Ghz
256MB Infineon Ram
10Gb Maxtor drive
Asus A4S800-mx board
Cd-RW

Does sound like motherboard if you get LED on but no activity.
You could try leaving off and removing CMOS battery from motherboard for a few minutes and then replace it and turn it on.

Could be that the the squealing PSU has fried the motherboard, cheap no name brand power supplies have been known to do that.
