PC won't start up again?

Hi all,

any ideas what could be causing this? I've dropped it off with the local PC repair man, but i'd really appreciate an insight to what it could be so I can figure out if I can afford a 2010 fix or if I am without Startcraft until January's pay day.

I've changed the cooler for a Coolit ECO liquid cooler, everything worked fine, I had about 6 hours gaming last night. I shut it down, then tried to turn it back on to check my ranks; damn thing won't boot up. CPU fan doesn't turn now either. I get power, all other fans are on, and I get two "fart noises" (not beeps) every 5 seconds, no display, just "fart fart". . . . . . . . . "fart fart".......

So I took it to bits and put my old fan cooler back in (surely it's the new hardware) nope, "fart fart" ... ...

So then I thought maybe it's a CPU fan problem, tried a different one, an 80mm 3 pin fan, and that started OK, but still no boot, not getting any display at all. So no 4 pin fans work on the CPU fan socket, but the small 80mm 3 pin one does.

Any ideas, I'm stumped and gutted.

Cheers all,

Shayne.

Check for any leaks on the CPU cooler. Did you use the paste supplied with the cooler?
What PSU do you have? It sounds like a PSU/Motherboard problem.
I would take everything out of the case and test it, with just the CPU, RAM, motherboard and GPU and see if you can get into the BIOS.
Another option is a CMOS reset, they can do wonders :)

I don't have it at the moment cos I left it with the PC repair man. So i can't try anything. I taken the "don't touch it, you could make it even worse view).

But I'm so glad that nobody replied and said "your CPU and Mobo are fried" or something like that.

I did use the paste with the cooler, it spilled out the side too when I attached the bracket, could it be that, but surely that would have caused problems immediately and not after a full night of use?

Cheers all, hopefully I'll find out tomorrow or Wednesday,

anybody got any other possibilites?

Shayne

Ah, so if it did spill, then it might've slowly took it's time to flow down to something. Hence it could have short curcuited the motherboard, and you might've killed it. Hopefully the CPU should be fine.

I guess that is possible, their wasn't much, and I couldn't get at it either, I used the full tube (1gram) but that's always been fine (I've upgraded my cooler twice since owning the PC).

Everything is under warranty at least, maybe once I know what it is, I might be able to get repair/replacements under manufacturers warranties.

I'll certainly let you know what it is when I find out myself,

Cheers all,

Shayne.

I may have missed the first part of this, so sorry if going over old ground.

Are you saying that the CPU fan doesn't spin on power up, but an alternative CPU fan does spin?

If that's the case then it's fair to assume the non-spinning one is broke - it may be possible that powering up your CPU and not having the fan working could cause it to over heat, I think. Especially if the heatsink itself was already hot from the gaming session.

I'm not talking from experience on this, as I've never burnt up a CPU, but I'm just trying to reason it out with logic!

Fingers crossed you get it fixed. :(

A 120mm fan won't start, a 92mm fan won't start, but an 80mm will start (each fan connected to the CPU_FAN on mobo in turn). The 120mm and 92mm are 4 pin fans, the 80mm fan is 3 pin (if that helps).

But even with the 80mm fan connected and powering up, the system still won't start (no display).

I'm pretty sure Intel i5s are fool proof for overheating, they get too hot, system shuts down regardless, although I'm not certain.

It just seems strange that everything was fine for a long game session , then immediately after, and this morning (plenty of time to cool) still no joy.

I guess everything must be seated right.

I'll be sure to let the forum know what is diagnosed when I find out, with so many things it can be, it's a tough call without being sat at the damn thing trying everything.

Cheers all.
