Hi...hope someone can suggest a reason why my son's desktop will not start?

He was using it the other day and for no apparent reason it decided to just switch off!!When first tried to restart it all he got was a strange sound,a bit like a knocking sound!

When I try to re-start it ,it will not power up.I thought perhaps as it's about 3 yrs old maybe the power supply was at fault but I'm not so sure now, as I opened up the base unit and turned the power on at the wall socket and the fan on the power unit was running also the fan on the graphics card albeit at a slow speed but on pressing the power button on the base nothing happens.

Sorry to be a bit long winded but thought the more detail the easier it might be to diagnose.

Any help much appreciated so thanks in advance. :)

If the board has power (ie the fans are running) then its a booting problem. Do you hear any bios beep codes. They usually make a single short one to let you know its booted ok. Can you hear that ?

if not you should hear a bios code of some sort. Does the speaker work, has it ever beeped at you ?

also might be worth swapping out the powersupply just to check and see if it boots. Easiest way to check, is to leave the powersupply installed. But just unplug the 20 pin ATX lead. Plug another one in (main 20 pin plug only) and see if it will boot with that. If not then you've saved yourself the bother of unplugged all the wires. If it does, just buy a new PSU and disconnect then reconnect everything to the new one.

Mr LOL...thanks for your quick reply.
On trying to turn on the pc no sound at all, just the fan on the PSU and also on the Graphics card.Don't understand why it shut down on it's own in the first place while my son was extracting from winrar.

Sorry for delay in replying Chobber but had to go out for a while. Can't say I noticed a light but will check and get back to you to-morrow as have things to do elsewhere at present.

Doesn't that sound like a dead hard disk? If he was extracting an archive and hit a bad part of the disk, would the computer not hang or shutdown?

Could it not be that you have killed the hard disk, and that is why it is not booting?

Can you get to the bios - if so can you see the hard disk listed?

Have you tried removing the PSU power connector which is connected to the motherboard, then replacing it. I came across a pc recently that would only start after you do this.

Nothing would happen when pressed the power button, then when i removed then replaced the plug the pc would get a surge of power and stop. For some reason the power button suddenly starts working again
