Pc won't start

Got a gigabyte x58a ud3r, intel 920 oc bundle, with corsair 520w power supply.

Everything was fine last night and the pc has been fine for 2-3 weeks since I bought it.

Now the pc will turn on for 1-2 seconds with CPU and psu fans starting but it then turns off and restarts. I've stripped it down to just the CPU, CPU fan, and power switch but I've still got the same problem, any ideas?

Obviously as you've stripped it down you have checked the seating of the CPU fan while you were in there?

Same thing was happening to my brother & his fan had come loose.

Do you have any memory plugged in? Try each stick individually

Unplugged all the memory, tried re seating the CPU fan and tried turning it on without it plugged in, no luck.

I think I reset the CMOS, does it just involve pushing the button at the back?

i think you need at least one stick of memory in for it to boot.

but it sounds to me like sonethings gone pop.

for a pc to boot you need (at least) cpu (cooler recommended), 1 stick ram, graphics card and psu to be connected to the motherboard. Are you hearing any beeps? Try pulling out the round battery on the motherboard and put it back after a minute. And try again.

Took the battery out for a few minutes, put back a stick of ram, tried it in several slots, put the gfx card back in but still no luck.

No beeps, fans just start spinning and then everything cuts out after a second and everything starts again.

My flatmates psu blew the other day although it wasn't a particularly good one for the rig he was running, maybe the incidents are related and we're receiving some sort of power surges?

From that description it sounds like either the PSU or the motherboard is knackered. Have you got any spares to test with?

To test the PSU, unplug everything except a few fans and take the Mobo power connector and join the green wire with any of the black ones. You can use a paperclip and just cross two of the holes. I used a staple when I had to.

To test my psu I was thinking of trying it out on my other motherboard, however i don't really fancy taking the new one out and going through the hassle of putting the old one back in. Would it be safe to run the old one from
inside a cardboard box?
