Had an issue, but just put up with it, however now PC won't start.

The issue, when I power on my PC it used to work fine. If I powered it down but didn't turn the wall socket off and wanted to turn the PC back on everything in the case that had an led would light up, fans would spin then turn off...repeatedly and the pc wouldn't boot.

If however after powering down the PC and switching the plug on I could turn the wallsocket back on and immediately be able to power the PC on. I put up with this for a couple of years as it was only rarely I'd have to immediately reboot my PC after a power down so it wasn't an issue.

Fast forward to last weekend and I booted my PC and it came up press f1 to run setup so I thought oh battery must have given up the ghost.

Today I replaced the battery but as soon as I power the PC up I get the flashing of lights as previously described.

Anyway, I've stripped PC and rebuilt it, reset the cmos and it booted to bios, but as soon as I set it up and save and reboot I get to the flashing lights again.

Thoughts on what it could be my thoughts are psu, bit I don't have a spare to check with so would need to buy one - what would people recommend?

Machine is msi z170 motherboard, 6600k overclocked to 4400, evga 1080 gtx, coolermaster 800watt silent pro gold psu, 16GB Ave iron 2400 for ram.

Am long overdue replacing the comp but can't really justify it or if I should really replace with a laptop.

Any thoughts.

Matt

I would be tempted to take out the gpu and boot with ths onboard gpu to see if you can get any further.

Try one stick of ram also.

removed the ram, no change, removed the gcard again to try lo and behold it booted am now sat in windows on it...so is this the gcard or the psu not supplying enough power?

If its GCard then I don't think I'll be able to replace at the current prices!

Need to test the gpu in another machine if you can .

I would try it again in both Gpu slots just in case its a,dodgy connection or faulty board.

Use the quote button please

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately don't have another machine to try it in.

Will try the other socket and see if that sorts the problem out.

Matt

Try something simple
Remove CMOS battery for at least 30 minutes
With pc disconnected from the wall socket
My gigabyte board sometimes does the
Need to turn off at the wall socket
And LEDs lit up but wont boot thing
Taking the CMOS battery out for at least 30 minutes fixes mine
And easy to try anyway

Swapping the GPU to one of the other slots appears to have sorted the issue out so it looks like the motherboard is the issue / on its way out...maybe the time for an upgrade is more urgent!

Thanks for everybodys help.

Just wanted to follow this thread up.

It seems my issue was the PSU.

I was checking out the members market and saw a reasonable priced PSU so bought it, stuck it in and all previous issues have gone away, boots when I want it to, had another problem when using USB drives the machine would power off, managed to update the bios today, download my camera everything working fine.

Can't believe it was the PSU, really thought it was the motherboard that was on its way out.

Thanks for everyone's help - however now have an upgrade itch but that can hold off for a few months now I think as not so desperate.
