PC won't switch on

Hi,

I believe I have a faulty PSU but before I do anything about it I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious.

Earlier today I switched my PC off by running the usual shut down mode on Windows. 10 seconds after it powered down I realised I needed to use the PC for something and so went to switch it back on only for it not to respond to me pressing the power button on the case. I left it and used my laptop for the task.

A few hours later I come back and press the power switch on my case and again no response. I whip the side off and check out things like the power switch pins being located properly. I also switched around power leads and tried it in different sockets. Still nothing.

As I'm about to give up I'm trying the switch again and it powers on. I use the computer for a couple of hours and it functions perfectly. I then switch it off and again am unable to switch it back on. Up until now I have yet to be successful in being able to switch it back on.

Things I've tried;
  • Different power lead
  • Different socket
  • Removed the power pin and tried shorting them with a screw driver to rule out a dodgy switch
  • Tried the paper clip method of shorting the two pins on the 24 pin connector

Still not able to get the PSU to fire up. Should I RMA it?

If so, how do I go about doing that? Is my warranty with OcUK or is it with the manufacturer?

My spec is as follows:
  • Seasonic G series 550w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
  • Silverstone TemJin TJ08B-E Midi Tower Case
  • MSI Z87M-G43 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard

Order with OcUK was placed 29 Oct 13.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Having recently had what sounds like your exact problem (I had the same Seasonic PSU) I'd suggest you RMA it. You can leave a webnote on OCUK website asking for an RMA number and then you have to post your PSU to them who then send it on to Seasonic :).

With my PSU/system, after turning my system off I had to leave the power supply unplugged from the mains for at least an hour before I could get it to boot again. This happened at the beginning of December and around a month later I found out my PSU was faulty and got it completely replaced.

I purchased my Seasonic G Series 550w PSU on the 7th November, so I wonder if there was something wrong with the manufacture of the PSUs during this time?

Hi Smithy,

I recently had quite a similar issue, All I did was unplug all peripherals from your machine, unplug the PSU power cable, and unplug your PSU power cable from the Motherboard. I left this for a good half an hour and came back to it and it worked, though it shouldn't be doing this at all so I would suggest an RMA.

Hope this helps you as a temporary workaround.
