Moving...
Just moved back into Uni, set up my computer, and it doesn't start :( . When flicking the switch on the back, i.e. the powersupply switch, it makes a loud high pitch noise, sort of like a siren, and the pc wont turn on. Pressing the on switch has no effect, it did turn on once but it just made more noises so I quickly turned it off. The light on the mobo doesn't come on either.

What can it be? It is a Hyper-Type R 530W(Think its 530?)PSU and i've heard bad things about these making noises so thats my first guess. Especially as I noticed a few weeks ago it started making a high pitch squeal but it was nowhere near as loud as it is now (and i cant be certain it has always done this). Also I travelled up in a car so it may have been bashed about a little bit there but it was fairly secured.

Unfortunately no one else has a computer so I cant test parts. So does anyone have guesses to the problem? If it is the PSU any chance it could have damaged other parts as well? Thanks a lot.

if i were you, i would take advantage of the uni on this one :) like you said, there is no one else with a comp, so take the psu down to the electrical engineer block or where ever it is, and get some guys to give you a hand and maybe if they like you, fix it if there is a problem :D

good luck, ags

Yeah, it sounds like the PSU. Apparently the Hipers just fail a lot totally, as opposed to surging or whatever.

At a guess, I'd say your other parts are OK.

Ok thanks for the quick replies. I'll take it into uni but i'm not sure there'll be anyone who can help me :( . Could anyone recommend me a decent PSU, cheap as poss, able to run the spec in my sig please?

Also, does anyone else think there's a possibility any other components could be damaged? Especially as it sort of turned on for a little bit? Ta guys.

Unplug the PSU and pull it out of the case. Attach a fan to one of the connectors. Next, take a paperclip and bend it into a u-shape. Insert it into the end of the ATX connector so green touches one of the black wires. Put a bit of tape over the paperclip, then switch the PSU on at the plug. It should whir into life. If it still makes a squeeling noise, the PSU is borked.

I had an Antec that did this after a cathode invertor decided to pop and smoke a few years ago. After a few hours of being left off, it was fine. I'm using it now...

Its a modular PSU so all the wires are sealed in a 'blue meshy material' lol, don't know what it's called! So am I right in thinkin I cant try this? And I'd probably electrocute myself anyway....

You must be able to do the paperclip trick (pulling PS_ON low) Otherwise you cannot connect the atx connector onto the motherboard :p

Thanks for that Chingoo but its still making the noise. Gonna need to buy a need PSU then methinks. Any suggestions please, lookin as cheap as possible I think i'll need about a 400W+ (i used a power supply calculator link i found off here).

Any opinions on the following makes: Tagan, Seasoninc and Antec? Cheers guys, gonna buy today so quick responses would be appreciated. Thanks very much.

Narrowed my decision down to 2, any views on which of the 2 better:

OCZ ModStream 450w ATX2.2 Power Supply
OR
Enermax Liberty 400W ELT400AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU

Or if anyone could recommend a better PSU for less that would be even better, cheers.
