Hello

i just finished building a pc for a friend with parts all bought from ocuk.

the problem, is that the motherboard is recieving power, but when i press the power button, the pc simply doesnt power up. i thought perhaps the button wasnt working, so i tried it with a different case front panel, same story.

ive checked and re checked the connecters to the mobo to make sure the on button is correctly connected, everything appears to be fine.

ive also tried with no components in the system, thinking perhaps the psu wasnt upto it, still, the power is getting to the mobo, but not powering up.

here are the complete specs:

P5NE-SLI mobo
HUNTKEY 500 watt psu (i think this MIGHT be the problem)
asus 7300 gt
1 gb (2x512) corsair
e4500 and stock cooler
some akasa case
3 hdds, 2 are ide, 1 is sata
2 disc drives

any ideas at all? i do intend on trying it with my antec trio at some point, but could it be anything else?

thanks

Check the PSU by jumpering two of the pins and it should spin fans up etc. Cant remember which pins off the top of my head because my WC kit came with a connector to do it

i dont know how to do this, if you or someone could explain it to me id be grateful

basically within the ATX connector there are two pins that you can short out (bit of cable to connect them) to bring the PSU online (same thing the power switch does in the Mobo). A quick google should tell you how to do it. This will eliminate the Mobo not sending the power on signal

ok i just tried jump starting it. i connected the green wire with the black wire right next to it with a staple. the connection was good, and the psu didnt turn on. does this mean the psu is at fault? or is this method of jump starting it not accurate enough

some makes of PSU need a bit of a load as well as shorting the pins, i just use a case fan.

ill give it a try

edit: nothing.

and now, to throw another confusing spanner in the works...

i tried it with my antec trio 550 watt psu, same situation. mobo light appears, but machine wont power on. im going to assume that the method of shorting the psu doesnt work, and that the psu is not to blame (i can try the huntkey in an inferio rig soon to double check).

does this mean the mobo is the problem then?

sorry for the bump.

i think both the mobo and the psu are at fault.

i have successfully jump started another psu using the same method, and it worked, so the huntkey must be dead, or at least not giving enough juice to power this mediocre build (gotta love the unbranded psu's), and im not going to try the huntkey in my pc.

is it possible that the psu shorted the motherboard as well?
