The pc was working fine this morning but it now turns on for less than a second the light flashes on, the fans try to start but then theirs a sort of click and it goes straight off. ive ruled out the psu and ram already, anyone had anything similer happen?

Could be a component (CPU) overheating. It'll switch itself off to prevent damage.
When something like this happens I usually open it up, take it all apart and put it all back together. Regarding hardware failure, it's hard to test just what is wrong unless you have a spare PC knockin' about.
Sometimes for me it's just been a wire not fully pushed in.
