PC Won't update.... (Win XP)

Any ideas?

My Dads PC will not update XP no matter how I try to do it, automatic, manual whatever settings I try simply returns a failed to update message.

He's a little concerned that he's not getting any security updates etc, and as he uses the PC for shopping on line I see his concern.

Is there any way to force XP to update itself? I have even copied SP3 from my PC to his and tried to run that, it failed also.

Is it re-format time? (seems daft to do so tbh, other than this issue, his pC works fine!)

Its an HP iMedia 1959 - Pentium D 950, 2GB RAM Win XP Home etc.

Have you tried restarting the autoupdate service? Instructions from microsoft website below:

No, but I am trying that now (one avenue I had not considered!) thanks, I'll report back.

Thus far, I have been trawling through this page http://wiki.castlecops.com/Windows_Update_Fix with little joy.

Well, I've followed all of the posted links, and at least managed to get SP3 installed & working.

Alas, on return to Windows update (taskbar telling me updates are ready to install) I still get a failed to install error!

Check the date and time are correct on the computer.

Also you could try deleting the downloads in case they are corrupted so that the update service can start fresh. Instructions from Microsoft website:

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try next time I'm over at his place, sp3 seems stable enough & its more uptodate than he was I suppose.

Ran Spybot & the like & found no issues, so his system seems clean.
