PC won't wake up

Hi all,

I've had an intermittent issue for sometime and I'd like to get to the bottom of the cause.

Basically every now and then my machine will go into a power save mode but won't wake up.

It happens on Windows 7 and 8, both with fresh installs but I have a feeling it's more of a hardware issue.

My motherboard was a cheaper one from Gigabyte which I've never been satisfied with, but my PSU was a well reviewed Corsair model, graphics card is a 7850 and I'm not overclocking.

I don't have spares to test in another build unfortunately, tried clearing/defaulting all the power options in the BIOS and within the power section on Windows but still no joy.

I don't get a useful error message to help pinpoint the issue either, anyone heard of this before or any advice?

Thanks.

what board and amd or intel?
sounds like amd and the power saving options.
in windows go to control panel / power options and set the advanced settings yourself (for the preset scheme) power saving/balanced/performance

Actually it's an Intel, is a Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3.

I've tried going through the power settings in Windows, the machine goes into power save fine initially, if I leave it 30 mins or so and come back and shake the mouse it'll wake up.

If I come back after an hour or so the machine is still running, the monitor has gone to standby, the mouse and keyboard are all still powered but pressing keys and moving the mouse does nothing.

I then have to hit reset or hold down the power button to kill it and restart.

I think the issue is that it's unable to wake properly from Sleep... unless you extend the time for Windows to sleep automatically, or disable it, the PC will go to Sleep after half an hour or so.

So if you want to try and pinpoint the issue like you said, try disabling Sleep like I suggested. You can always re-enable it no problem. :)

If I recall correctly, lots of Intel systems suffer from this issue, but I can't remember why. Something to do with idle states? Or something?

I had this issue myself with two different systems. I just disabled sleep. If I need the computer to be in a sleep-ish state, I just put it into hibernation. (can be re-enabled in the registry)

what memory are you using and how much?

it saves/resumes sleep state from the memory so might need tweaking with voltage/settings

Thanks I'll probably just do that, I just hate having an issue I can't properly solve (or even identify in this case!).

Cheers for all the comments guys, am on the latest BIOS and actually needed to replace my RAM due to 1 faulty stick of a pair and experienced the same on both so don't believe it's a RAM problem.
