Hi

Hoping someone here can help me - i've just finished working my PC - i added some new fans, changed the RAM and the GPU - also tided up in general..

Everything was ready so plugged the important stuff back in and left the case open just in case anything was the matter or didn't work - lo and behold i pressed the power button and the fans came on, the light on the motherboard came on everything was looking good for about 2 seconds then it all just powered off...

I tried it again, same thing - so i seen another thread on here where someone said there PC wouldn't turn on, they suggested various things but the first one was try 1 stick of RAM at a time - i removed one and booted up - everything was looking good all fans working and lights on - then within seconds i got a fairly strong smell of what i could only describe as burning - of course i turned off straight away - i've looked and i can't see anything actual damaged - there wasn't any smoke or anything - could it have been one of those weird 'newness' smells being pumped out by the new fans or was something actually burning...

What do i do now?

Thanks

Sounds more PSU based to me if there was a strong smell of burning. I've never noticed new hardware having a strong smell of burning, unless it's heating up dust or something.

What's the make, wattage and model of the PSU? What is the PSU running in your system?

Try removing the PSU from the system fully and using the paperclip trick (short the green and a black wire on the 24 way ATX connector) to get it up and running and see if it works properly without shutting itself down. You might need to load the PSU up with a fan or something to get it to come on.

It's the Corsair TX 750W ATX SLI PSU - i don't think ocUK sell it anymore - it's an older model i assume i've had it less than a year and never had any issues with it - i read on another thread about a similar issue someone said "Could be the GPU heating up (mine did this when i first got it)." - could it be the new GPU being fired up for the first time - it's hard to describe the smell really...

I freaked out when I smelled burning the other day, took the case cover off and all. Turns out someone down the road was burning some rubbish and I had the window slightly open :D

ha ok tried the PSU with the paperclip trick and it worked so PSU still good i assume - i'm beginning to think it was maybe a new smell from the GPU - smelling the actual GPU it has one of those weird new/storage smells..

ok consider this problem solved - it was a mixture of things really - the rear fan cable was trapped against the case exposing the wire and shorting out, it even sparked on the motherboard when i plugged it into another slot - in the whole process i did find out since the rebuild the cpufan header on the mobo is now broke - no power is being supplied through it at all - weird to say the least...
