PC2-6400 vs PC2-8000

Could someone please enlighten me?

I am about to purchase a E6700 and notice the FSB is 1066Mhz. Looking at most peoples signatures that have this or the E6600 chip, the majority of people are running PC2-6400 RAM which runs at 800Mhz FSB!

As this is not synchronous surely there is a performance hit and would it not be advisable to purchase PC2-8000 RAM which runs at 1066Mhz FSB :confused:

Any comments would be appreciated.
 
You mistaken the quad-pumped FSB (1066Mhz) with the actual FSB (266Mhz), which is the speed the RAM is running at when it's synchronised with FSB. However because DDR2 being double data rate the effective speed is 533Mhz PC4200. Therefore a PC6400 DDR2 800 is more than adequate for C2D systems, leaving plenty of headroom for tweaking and overclocking.

PC8000 is therefore not neccesary and only needed if you intend to do some heavy ocing and take advantage of high FSB.

sync with PC2-8000 would require a motherboard running at 533FSB...... which few if any can do!

Not to mention the fact that it'd be running your chip at 3.7Ghz miniumum (7x533=3731), which might be in reach, but might not with your E6700.

PC2-6400 will be fine... heck i can run my PC2-5300 at more than PC2-8000 speeds if i want to :)
 
thx for the replies and clarification on FSB.

Assuming I am not going to heavily o/c (if at all) would you suggest the PC6400 over the PC4200?

I decided to go for the Crucial Ballistix 2GB PC2-6400C4...ohh and I also changed the CPU from E6700 to Q6600 ;)

Thx again, hopefully I will finally learn the patience to o/c this time :rolleyes:
 
Someone posed this question to me the other daya nd I wasn't too sure... which would be better in this scenario?

So with a E6600 would you go for the 5300 or 6400?

I'll be overclocking my E6600 on air.
