Hi People,

Despite the decades of building PC I never bothered much digging into RAM so I need some guidance here.

If I get a motherboard which supports base clock 4800mhz with up to 6400mhz OC, would two sticks of 4960mhz (6200 OC) work fine or I need to get, let's say, 4800 (6000 OC) as the base matches the motherboard non-overclocked capabilities?

It seems the upper base 4800 go is 6000mhz, also the ASUS MB I am looking at do not even have something in between like the example above, next step is 5000mhz base.

Thank you!

If you google the model number, you'll usually get a spec sheet, or a PDF doc and it will tell you what the memory is programmed to boot at. For example: I picked a random Corsair 6200 module and it said that it is programmed to boot at 4800 and I picked a random Kingston 6000 module, which is also programmed to boot at 4800.

Keep in mind that what the motherboard supports is not the same as what the CPU supports. I'd check two things before you buy: the motherboard's QVL (ideally, only buy memory that is on the QVL) and experiences of memory overclocks that other users with the same CPU have.

True, I did not think about checking the QVL :) Just looking @ z690 as z790 are a theft really, however ideally I wanted to go with 6200 cl36 hence the question.

I tried to do was you suggested to find out the boot speed, I cannot find it anywhere though, CMH32GX5M2B6200C36 is the model.

Edit: https://pangoly.com/en/compatibility/asus-rog-strix-z690-f-gaming-wifi/ram found this handy website, never heard of if before so not sure how safe is to take that into account.

Is this is the same memory, but white? (with a W) https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categ...-—-White/p/CMH32GX5M2B6200C36W#tab-tech-specs

If so, then it is also 4800.
