Looking to buy memory for a E6300 with DS3/4 combo. Hoping to overclock it on air to around 3ghz i've seen the odd post/review claiming to manage this with PC5300 but most people seem to be doing it easily running PC6400, although I was under the impression you could 'get away with' the lower speed memory for a E6300 it was only when overclocking an E6600 you 'had' to go for the fast stuff, probably going to go for the Geil as well due to having not much cash and early opinions on it being favourable (I know recently people have complained) so my questions are:

1) can I get away with overclocking the slower memory or should I pay the extra for the faster stuff?

2) will i regret it if I only buy 2x512Mb? (2x1Gb seems to be the standard but it'll be cutting close to my budget)

thanks, :)

i got 2GB Geil 6400 ULL running it at its default, 400mhz with my e6300 at 2.8 (50% overclock)

i game to the 2GB was essential, to me anyway

IMO the amount of RAM needed depends on what you use your system for.

In my eyes 1GB is minimum amount of RAM nowadays, 2GB or more is ideal though for gaming, running apps like premiere, CS2 etc.

if all you use it for is web browsing, media playback etc then go for 1GB

On a 6300, 3ghz = 428x7. So, you need memory that will do PC6400 or faster to get to 400mhz+ FSB (DDR2-800 = 400mhz on memory speed. ) This is assuming you are clocking at 1:1. If you run asynch, you'll need memory that will run even faster than 400mzh.

So, I would suggest buying PC6400 or faster if you want to be assured of your memory running at the speeds you are aiming for. And, I would absolutely suggest 2 x 1gb of memory these days.
