PC6400 @ 933DDR, 12-4-4-4 timings. Problems

Hi all

I've got some excellent Geil PC6400 memory, the cheapy low latency stuff and it keeps surprising me with its abilities.

I've got it to DDR933 using a 1:1.2 ratio to my Q6600's FSB, but I can't quite get the timings higher than 12-4-5-4 @ 2.1v

Any tips I should try. I've upped the voltage to 2.1v and according to Geil it's rated up to 2.3v but the chips are already hot to the touch and I don't want to push it further before my Antec 900 case arrives this week with lots of airflow.
 
What is the advantage of running much faster than the CPU can actually process data?

I found when I ran 970FSB and 12-5-5-5 my 3DMark scores dropped quite a lot, as did the outright memory bandwidth shown in Memtest86+

Running at 933fsb and 12-4-5-4 gives more 3DMarks and better bandwidth. I just can't quite get it to 12-4-4-4 anymore, any tips for that? I've left all the voltages apart from CPU and mem at stock. Should I adjust any motherboard voltages on my P35 Neo2-FR?

Got mine to 930 with 4-4-4-12 at 2.2V, can't really go any higher because I only have a 4600+ :/ overclocked better than I thought though

As an aside, if you're changing the CAS timings up by 5/4 and not the fsb by more than 5/4 of the highest you can get without changing the timings, then it isn't going to be faster is it? It's going to process the data faster but you won't be able to fetch it as fast?

Well to use the motorway analogy

If you run faster DDR speed you are increasing the amount of lanes on the motorway so 4 lanes instead of 3 allowing more cars to pass up the road

But if you run faster timings you're increasing the speed limit, allowing the cars to drive faster up the road.

Both are increase speed, and both improve performance. But unless you run programs that transfer a vast amount of data it's of more use to tweak the timings rather than increase the bandwidth.
