If I was to upgrade to SLI, since my graphics card supports PCI-E 3.0, would it be worth upgrading the motherboard with 3.0 support, or just keep my 2.0 and SLI as it is?

This is based on 2 cards running at x16/x16 on either PCI-E 2/3. I know PCI-E3 is double the speed of 2, but ould there me much of a visible performance increase? Would it really matter?

My being fussy is thinking yes, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!!

Far as I am aware there is very minimal difference if any that we would notice between the 2.

Your current board will run them at pci-e 2.0 8x/8x which is fine.

I'm not looking to use my current board, I'll be getting a new one. I just wanted to know if:

1. Would it be worth getting Gen3?
2. Would there be a performance increase to benifit or not?

Only a slight one in benchmarks. 1 fps gaming I'd guess.

It's not necessary yet, especially for a 660, Hence me saying 8x/8x pcie2.0 is fine. (that's what I use for 680s)

After switching from PCI-E 2 - PCI-E 3, it gained me a massive 50 points in 3DMark11. The gains are poor.

To be fair, benchmarking is not of interest to me, but if it makes little difference, it clearly not worth it.

If I can be bothered, I'll be upgrading the motherboard to support SLI x16/x16 and get another 660 when the prices comes down. Wont be for a while yet, but I was interested none the less.

Benching is the best way to find these things out for when people ask these kind of questions.

+1 and in some instances, I would be surprised if it is as much as 1fps.

Letting rip on the heaven 3 bench with everything maxed @1600 a pair of GTX 690s in quad sli gain a wopping 0.5 of a FPS going from PCIe 2 to 3.

PCIe 2 is fine for this generation of cards and the next.
