PCI-E Frequency

Hey guys,

Just came across this in BIOS, I have the PCI-E frequency set to Auto. I read somewhere that this should be at 100mhz? I have PCI-E overvoltage set to 0.1V. CPU @ 2.88GHz 0.1FSB overvoltage, DDR2 Overvoltage 0.2V and FSB sped 320.

Should I just leave the PCI-E frequency to auto or change it. I've got a 3DFuzion 7600GT

Yeah the optimal setting for that is 100MHz, though sometimes when overclocking (especially on P5B boards) you might need to increase it to 110MHz or it will fall over.

I've got a DS3 board. Will 100mhz do. In the bios it has a little message on the side saying if you set it more than 100mhz it is not guaranteed to operate properly. Should I pay much attention to that as a lot of things I do in the bios it seems to advise against :D

don't worry, people have had pci-e upto figures like 115/120 quite frequently with no problems, so 100 or 110 wont be a problem

Probably not. I say some benchmarks that showed decreasing the PCI-E bus to x4 caused no major effect to graphics performance, except with the 8800 cards. Overclocking will give you slightly higher bandwidth, but with nothing using or needing it there will probably be no effect. If it works though, what harm.

Got mine at 100 mhz, has always been fine. My raid array and one of the 2 sata drives I have did corrupt however when I accidently forgot to manually set it and it ended up being on auto with a 50% overclock on the CPU. My board is an S3 also, which can't be much different to the DS3.

Is this true? What do you mean it will fall over? btw what stepping is your e6300 :) thats quite a nice OC you have there.

i know you didnt ask me but i did write mine down the other day to see if it is any good. I know it will do 3.1 but then it becomes ram limited.

Well the P5Bs in particular sometimes set the PCI-E 16x slot to 1x speeds when you OC, the only way I've found to correct this is setting the frequency of the PCI-E lane to 110MHz.

Can't tell you the stepping from memory, I'm afraid. It's been ages since I had thermal paste or a cooler off it long enough to look at it. :)

Definitely RAM limited, the GeIL Ultra stuff isn't really as superb as people make out as I hit a wall at 3.1GHz too when I had it. Switched it for some G.Skill HZ and the clocks wouldn't stop climbing after that.
