My MoBo: Z87X-OC Force
Board info: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4484#ov

Now my Question. my board say it will do 16x,0,0,0 / 8x,8x,0,0, / 8x,4x,4x,0 / 8x,4x,4x,4x Last 4 on a PLX chip.

so.... if i run 2 cards it will be 8x,8x,0,0 but i want better air flow to the second card so can i drop it down one slot and get 8x,0,8x,0 or will it lower down to 4x? the slots are all pinned upto 8x.

and.... if i use a 1x pcie sound card will it drop the lains down? say 8x4x1x as it take bandwidth

Pcie is soooo confusing :D

Thats not right,

That board supports 4 way SLI, so it does 8X,8X,8X,8X.

Use the single black slot to bypass the PLX and get best latency with a single card.

:P yep i am stupid, i did think. i know moving the second card down one slot would cover the bottom x1 and forgot it would also uncover one of the x1's for me to use :D

thanks haha

If you have the board and cards already why dont you just try it and see what happens for yourself.

Am at work with nothing better to do. So thought i would ask before going to the bother of messing if not going to work.

Also i am 100% i can only do 2way sli on my board because its 4x

Its not, it has PLX chip, it does 4way SLI at 8X and the specs in the link you gave says so.

3 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1~3)
* For optimum performance, if only one expansion card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_2 slot.

2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x8 (PCIEX8_1~2)
* The PCIEX8_1 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 slot and the PCIEX8_2 slot with PCIEX16_3. The PCIEX16_1/PCIEX16_3 slot will operate at up to x8 mode when the PCIEX8_1/PCIEX8_2 is populated.
(The PCIEX16 and PCIEX8 slots conform to PCI Express 3.0 standard.)
* The PCIEX16_2 slot will become unavailable when an expansion card is installed in the orange PCI Express x16 slot.

It does help if you know what parts you have.

That board is 2way SLI.

You use the 1st+3rd slots for 8X/8X.

put the sound card in the last slot that is run from the chipset and does effect the other slots.

silly question, i came across this thread while searching for an answer to somthing related to this.

what is the benifit to running 2 cards at 8x,8x than 1 at 16x?? i dont see the logic?

The PCIe speed (1x, 2x, 4x, 8x) has only a few % effect on the graphics performance.

Adding another GPU (2 cards compared to 1) allows them to work together, giving you up to twice the graphics performance. The "scaling" depends on the game, whether you get close to double or not.

Just so you know, you can't SLi 290s ;)

Indeed.

Example: I can run Dying Light on one GTX Titan at 1440p with everything maxed out and pull 45-60fps. By enabling SLi on with my 2nd GTX Titan, I'm able to double. Obviously this depends on the game and what's being rendered, but I'm now pulling 85-125fps.
