Please disregard the title, the real question is below:

Do 7.1 cards drive 5.1 speakers ok?

Not sure there are any PCI-E soundcards in which case you might have to use an external one, or the onboard, or choose another motherboard. I could be wrong though, they might have started to appear now.

7.1 card is fine with 5.1 speakers as said above.
