I have an old computer with an X79 motherboard that obviously does not support USB 3.1 so instead of buying a whole new computer for what is not that much of a big upgrade I was going to get this card:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/silv...nd-usb-3.0-pcie-expansion-card-cc-008-sv.html

which adds a USB 3.1 port and two USB 3.0 ports and then get an external USB 3.1 SSD drive to expand my storage options for games.

It says it needs a SATA 15 pin power connector. Can anyone link me to one of these cables on OCUK? I can't seem to find the right cable on the OCUK website.

Does this sound like a reasonable plan at all? If I can avoid buying a whole new computer that would be great as it is a lot of money to spend. I guess I could upgrade the GPU at the same time and get a decent upgrade to gaming performance while also getting more storage for games and for storing videos that need to be edited.

Cool. Thanks guys. I wasn't sure.

Even if it doesn't have a spare SATA port I think I still have the box with loads of spare cables in the loft thinking about it. I wasn't sure if it was a special type of cable or not.

If you don't have a spare sata connection, a molex connection should suffice using a molex to sata power converter(if you have one).

Thanks. I seem to remember my power supply came with a massive bag of cables (it was a rather high end modular power supply when I bought it). There should be something in there but if not I'll get one of those cables.

Now the problem is finding my stuff in the loft :).

But why connect it via USB?

I guess I could go with an internal drive. I just try and avoid doing any work inside my PC if I can avoid it.

Having looked on OCUK though I could get a Samsung 850 Pro 2TB drive, a 2.5" drive to 3.5" drive adaptor and a couple of cables for a reasonable price. I just hope it isn't a pain in the arse to install the drive.

No more difficult than installing an expansion card would be, and you won't have any drivers to worry about.

Why the 850 PRO? I'd save the £250 and buy the EVO.

Ah, you are right. The EVO is a big cost saving. I'll get that then. I doubt I'll keep my current computer for more than 5 years so the shorter warranty isn't much of an issue.

2TB seems big and expensive as well, but it's your money to spend.

1TB and only keep the games you're actually interested in playing installed would be my choice. That's still a big-ish SSD even now.
