Anyone use one of these and can tell me do they do the job of what your motherboard does just as well. on x99 i never had an issue because i had enough USB ports but my new z790 board does not have enough. I really don't fancy dangling usb hubs and seen these cards ranging from 2 port to 7 port that look like a solution.

Are they just simply plug and play?
Any recommendations for a decent one or any cons to using them?

I've a 7-port one. Yip, plug n play. Seems to work just fine. Had one issue recently where some sort of power issue meant nothing plugged into it was recognised, but a quick reboot sorted it.

Just bought a 7 port one myself, was quickly running out of USB ports, just waiting for it to arrive.

I've been using them for years, mainly because windows doesn't like too many devices per root hub, never a problem.

Why would you run out of ports? You've got rear, front, and option for USB hub.

For neatness and ease of use I could understand not using anything buy a USB hub, but even so use one of those and sorted. Unless you have multiple high transfer devices ie if you have ten USB hard drives transferring from multiple USB at the same time I could see that overloading the bus

thank you for the replies, i've already encountered a USB overpowered scenario on this motherboard(not something i ever encountered on my x99 baord with 2 more additional items) so i'm reluctant to use a USB hub as it is. like @hornetstinger above said i think it somehow overloads the bus. suppose the price we pay for Fancy LED keyboards etc.

I have a micro atx motherboard and was close to running out of ports and need to add 2 more devices.
So when I saw this thread I had a look at pcie usb adapters and it was cheap so ordered one.

Also I didn't even think about a usb hub, so thanks for pointing that out.
Have added to my basket and will weigh up my options.
