I don't have PCI-E that's accessable anymore. I want at leats a dual if not quad NIC in PCI.

Is there such a thing?

I have both a dual and quad nic thats pci-e 8x. I guess the worst case would be using an adpater cable?

I'd look at a Intel PRO/1000 MT Server NIC (dual or quad). They're fairly cheap on the second-hand market.

They're PCI-X but should work in a standard PCI slot (you'd need to check, I could dig one out and try it if you can't find a definitive answer).

Using a standard PCI slot will obviously strangle the performance.

Yes, I sold a quad Intel PCI NIC a little while back as I went over to a PCI-E board.

I also used 64bit PCI-X cards in 32bit PCI slots without any problems, so long as you have a board with no component behind the back of the slot to let the 64bit section hang over. (Plus 4 port PCI-X cards are easier to find than PCI)

Edit: Dammit Bremen, kinda beat me to it.
