PCI sound card in pcie slot

Was surprised that I could use second pcie slot for a PCI sound card. It always been tight fit with two PCI slots filled (1 NIC,1 sound card)

But after upgrade one of my PCI slots was being blocked by new 3 slot gpu, luckily had second pcie slot and it works in there.

a pci soundcard wont fit a pci-e slot, and even if you forced it it it wouldn't work

Yep, PCI and PCI-e(xpress) are completely incompatible so those terms have to be always clearly distinguished from each others.

I guess he means PCIe x1 these work in PCIe 16x slots

reading the comments too makes me laugh this has been well known for years yet some of them see it as the second coming.

Wasn't PCI-e (usually white) the upgrade for ISA that we all standardised on after the MCA/EISA shuffle? It then matured into PCI-x, the current standard?

PCI-E was revived and from earlier PCI so once again 2xGPU's could be used using old SLI moniker which 3DFX had done before but did not stand for same thing AFAIR.

As you know cards went from PCI to AGP then PCI-E, AFAIR AGP's next big upgrade after x8 was to have massive bandwidth but only in 1 direction as that is all a GPU normally needs but to run 2 GPU's needed it both ways so AGP died.

We are currently on PCI-E, PCI-X was for servers.
