Pci-X card in Pci slot?

Am I right in thinking a Pci-X card will run fine in a standard Pci slot? How about the other way round? Anything to watch out for? Im after a Sata controller for a motherboard with only pci slots, and as ive come across lots of Pci-X controllers I wondered what the situation was.

Probably should have looked there first. Right, that's all good then. Ive spotted a Adaptec 2820SA SATA 8-Port 128MB Raid 5 Controller Card for a very good price. It looks like exactly the thing im after, but it mentions that it is; "Half-size PCI form factor" Is that half size in height or half size in length. Ie, will it fit in a standard matx mobo in a ATX 4U rackmount chassis?
