Hi,

So i installed my hd 4870 a while ago and its been working fine, not oc'd or anything.

Untill

Last night i turned off computer and this morning i turned it back on and it would not load up anything on the monitor(as in no signal) Although there is no picture i can here the fans whirling then stopping then going again then stopping, the cd drive makes a kind of noise too that it makes then it stops then it does it again. Its like evberything is powering up then powering down then powering up again. Its weird.

Anyway i can get my comp to work with the internal graphics although at startup it still does that noises a few times before i get a picture.

I dont think the card is faulty because it happened before on a different card and i fixed it, i just cant remember how. the ram is fine too i think, although i have not ran memtest or anything, i have dissconected all the hardivers etc and it still does this. im pretty sure the problem lies with my MB. i just dont want to take the whole thing apart again.

Waterchill watercooling
Fatal1ty sound card
Gigabyte mb skt am2
hd 4870
5gb cheap ram:eek:
amd 4200+
2x ide hdd
1x sata
onyx titan 800w psu
dvd writer
cd writer

If u need me to expand on any of it just let me know.

Thing is it was working fine then just stopped.

Have you overclocked your cpu!
Tried doing a CMOS reset and and disabling the onboard gpu.

I have tried resetting csmos.

my Mb has the option of both or onbord if no peg etc. i have not tried completely disabling onboard cause if it doesnt work it means resetting my csmos again and its right behind my gpu so i have to take everything apart, Watercooling etc.

Do u think it would be worth a try though?

Cpu has been oc'd but been back down at standard for a good few month now.

Not sure about the noises but check your bios settings in Advanced BIOS Features. I'm only generalising here as I have never had AMD but have used several Gigabyte (Intel 775) motherboards and in the above menu, check Init Display First is set to PEG and Onboard VGA is Enable If No Ext PEG.
Again, I'm just wondering if BIOS is going straight to onboard if CMOS is resetting itself.

Ah, I had simular problem with my old board, you had to remove everything to reset the BIOS.

I would not worry for the time being, have tried removing all components bar 1 hd, 1 sick of ram and your gpu also remove your sound card and see what happens.

Yeah i tried using 1 hard drive (swapping about) to make sure one wasnt faulty also tried the same with ram, havent taken out sound card cause its the worst 1 to take out. I pretty much dissconnected everything that wasnt essential but it was still the same.

I dont know if it has something to do with having an nvidia chipset and an ati card?

When it happened before it was with my old 1650 pro but i sorted it somehow.

Rightnow i just have it working through my onboard.

Im pretty sure it does power up then power down when it starts though because the 3 lights on the back of my gpu flash on then off ( the same as is happening with my fans etc. Last time i counted it did it 8 times then started. And im pretty sure it does it the same amount of times when i have my monitor plugged into the gpu , only i dont get any signal, Wheras with my onboard i do.

Do you have another gpu you can test, just trying to work out is it a faulty motherboard or gpu or not enough power.

ATI with Nvidia chipset makes no difference only if you want to run crossfire, same goes for Intel chipsets you can't run SLI but can run single Nvidia cards.

I could stick in my old gpu see what happens, i had considered lack of power but im not sure how i can measure the exact amount i am pulling, I got the 800 thinking it would be enough.

My guess would be knackered Mb, Hope not though cause hard to find a Mb these days that has the 2 ide slots, Everything has gone sata. Saying that, i would rather it was the MB than my gpu

Try your spare card at least it can give you an idea whats happenig, if it still does the re-booting then it could rule out a power supply problem, but! the make / model of your psu does not fill me with confidence .

If it is your motherboard can you not update your ide hard discs or CD drives to sata :)

Yeah i wont be buying another psu like that, i thought i would just buy a cheap 1, first 1 that arrived blew a rail out in 5 mins, And i noticed all the plug connectors are very poor quality. it was a struggle just to plug them in the connectors from my hdd and cd etc. So anyways this is my replacement one that i got.

Next time i will just fork out what needs to be spent.

As for the sata thing, yeah i think i can get sata converters for them.

I will try out my old gpu later om tonight and let you know how i get on.:p

Ok so i tried putting im my old 1650 and it had the exact same problem. It turns out though that it doesnt do it when i dont have anything plugged into the pcie slot, I thought i checked that already bur obviously not.

i wonder if im just being stupid and need to change something in bios or if the Mb is shot?

Just an update for today,

turned on computer to show no signal through onboard gpu sp plugged my monitor back into my 4870 and it works. I have not changed anything but its working again so dunno what the crack is with it.
