PCIE - is the standard really standard?

Or in otherwords, if I bought one of the new 1/2 memory 8800 GTS cards would it work in my two year old Gigabyte K8NF9 mobo?

The mobo has a PCIE-16 slot with a 6600GT card and no issues at all.

I understand I'd need a new powersupply for the new GPU, with an Antec Trio 430 looking to meet the BFG specs.

I doubt gigabyte even support the NF9 so bios updates are unlikely - so is the PCIE really a standard?

Yes its a standard, and the 8800 GTS will work in that board fine, the Antec should be fine also has it has 3x 12v rails each supplying 16a.

Thanks for the prompt reply, looks like the £250 upgrade to x5 the performance really is a bargain - just wish I could stretch to new a mobo & duo cpu to match....
