PCIe power lead

Hello

Just a simple query.
I have a 6-pin PCI lead that comes straight out the PSU. The 6 cables are sleeved, but I can see them when they enter the point of the 6-pin plug. This then splits off to a second 6-pin plug (i.e. another 6 leads come from plug one and go into a second plug)
This was fine for my old card which just required one 6-pin plug to power it. I now have a new card that requires two 6-pins.
Surely I can't plug both of those pins in and it'll all be fine? In my head it seems that the power would be split in 2?
I do have another cable I can attach to the PSU and run direct into the other slot so I have 2 full power leads attached to the card. I'm just curious why the one originating from the psu would be split? Would it work just as well as having 2 seperate leads?
I'm not an expert on power as you can probably tell.

You should be fine, what is the make / model of the PSU?

Edit: Is it the Xclio one? if it is I would personally invest in a decent brand PSU and dump this rubbish.

Haha, yeah it's the Xclio Greatpower 650w. It's done me grand for about 5 years (probably jinxed it now)
I'll probably invest in a new one in the near future.
If my existing cable can get me through in the meantime I'll be happy.

Thanks

Argh! I did indeed jinx myself.
New card installed, using the 'dual' lead. 5 mins into Skyrim and the PC does an instant switch-off. Tried again and the same thing. Checked CPU temps, case temps etc and all are fine.
No blue screen so can't diagnose that way. The graphics card is the only new addition. Old card was an asus 6850 so only required one 6-pin.
So, my assumption is the PSU is tripping and causing instant shutdown. Could this be due to the cable? I never had time to try a seperate cable last night.
Is there anything else it could be?

Is your GPU work when not in games then? or did you run it of on-boardS?

GPU is fine so far for just standard browsing etc. I don't have on-board graphics.
I've left it idling for a couple of hours and it was fine.
Just before it happens I can hear the card fan ramp up slightly so I know it's getting more of a load on it. Temps seemed fine though as it idles at around 38ish degrees.
Had no problems with my old card, so it's either the new card or the power going into it.
Could it be the card itself?

If the card is idling fine its not a problem with the card, its an issue with the amount of power getting to it..

I think you need a new PSU.

The wife will be pleased. The bargain of the new card has just become a tad more expensive :)

Ok, any recommendations? XFX and Seasonic seem to be high on most people's lists.
I won't be crossfiring, so the 650w I currently have is probably overkill.
What about future-proofing. The Haswells seemed to need different requirements? (not really read up on it as I don't have one)

Thanks

Same thing happened to my 7850 until I connected my braided power cables (which forces you to use two separate, independent cables each going to the PSU) and that seems to have solved it.

Download the HIS iturbo and run GPU_Z test on it - look at the 'power' bit and it will go red if under load and green if all OK.

Hello

Only saw this post this morning, but funnily enough I actually did this last night. I had spare 6-pin cables to add to the PSU so put one in so I had the two seperate cables powering it. Fingers-crossed it seems to have satbilised it. I was able to run skyrim and I also ran a furmark burn in test (only about 20 mins) and all was good.
I'll have a look at the iturbo. Is there anything else I can check to make sure it's stable and getting enough juice?

Morning :)
Hopefully that will settle things down a bit.
In my experience sometimes it still takes a few days of normal running to bed things in and let things settle. Particularly when using Windows.

There probably are other utilities out there but I only used the iTurbo application (Comes bundled with my card) and used that as indicator.

My build is all new and now its settled down over the past couple of weeks its rock solid now, although I don't like the AMD drivers one bit. (I'm running the 13.8 Beta though which seems to have improved things)
