PCIe riser cable. Yay or nay?

Looking to build a more efficient and crucially smaller mITX system. However, many if not most of the cases I've seen require a PCIe riser cable. Never having had to use one before, i'm hearing negative issues such as poor signals from the graphic card and even loss of signal. Has anyone had a bad experience with such cables? And if not, can they recommend a decent one for not silly money?

Even the really good ones can be problematic with PCIE setting specially in the BIOS. Sometimes they just work. Sometimes they cause graphical corruption and instability without the right settings.

However, set to PCIE 4 (or 3) and you’ll be fine usually.

I have used thermaltake and u-link both with ‘just works’ and ‘needs figuring out but worked in the end’ outcomes.

For a small case it’s hard to avoid. If it’s just to be pretty I wouldn’t bother, but I prefer function over form.
