It just reduces the need for large 8 pin connectors where one much smaller 12pin will do the same job.

And do you have any idea what such small high pin count connector will do especially with so much increased power limit?

It will increase thermal density extreme amount with lot higher current through smaller tighter packed contacts!
As result connector's connect/disconnect count endurance will be lot shorter, unless you want it to melt.
Like those cases of melted/burned ATX12/EPS12V connectors when it was loose.

So even if PCIe 5.0 graphics cards don't release for another 5 years, it's still worth buying a PCIe 5.0 PSU today if you need a new PSU anyway.

I bought a 2021 revision Corsair RM850x when OCUK had them on offer and that didn't even come with a 12 pin FE cable so I expect that if we need new pci-e cables we are going to have to either buy them or go begging to the psu manufacturer for one.

It looks like it from the asus video above. @38.30 ish they highlight the fe edition 12pin as PCIe 5 power while talking about their PSUs and GPU power.
I’m sure there are other resources around that can provide a definitive answer.

If it is, hopefdully they plonk it in a less stupid place than on the fe cards.

The only company ever hyping that was Intel, since it's their baby. Motherboard and PSU manufacturers have rejected it.

Further, it was also said again that the major motherboard manufacturers, along with the major OEM power supply manufacturers, have prevailed and have given a united front of rejection to Intel’s ATX12V0 project. This keeps 24-pin and EPS (currently) and also keeps the cost of the motherboards in check. In our own discussions with board layouters, there were also several expressions of displeasure against the relocation of the extraction of the individual voltages on the motherboard, based on technical imponderables and an unwanted fragmentation.

Biggest market for all ihv`s is the likes of HP and Dell , home DIY is tiny
