PCMCIA SRAM cards and modern laptops?

I have a data logging system in a race car that stores data on a 1 gigabyte PCMCI SRAM card, at least I think that's the cards correct description. My old Toshiba laptop allowed me to insert this card in a slot and it would be able to copy the data to the hard drive, where the data analysis programme for the data logger would read it. This old laptop has now died and my newer (probably already a dinosaur to computer buffs ;)) Dell 1720 Inspiron has proven incapable of accepting these cards. They enter the card slot but won't fully engage (connect). I *think* the Dell uses Card Bus, whereas the Toshiba used "something else"?

How can I read card data into this newer lap top, or indeed my desktop PC please? Thanks.

PC Card/CardBus (alternative name for 32 bit PC Card) have been dead for a long time.

Your Dell has an ExpressCard/54 slot but you can buy an adaptor to PC Card- Google 'ExpressCard to CardBus Laptop Adapter PC Card - CardBus adapter - ExpressCard/34 - Plug-in module' although it is expensive at £40.

Thanks for the fast reply. Is there any sort of external adaptor say via the USB port? One I could also use to transfer card data to my main home desktop PC, as well as to the laptop? Something that would transfer to both would be financially better. Cheers.
