Hi all

We don't have a psu section so have to put this here. Hoping some of the gurus round here can help, I will be braiding all my cable inside my pc and as I will be using white braid I will probably have to replace the coloured wires with white ones but I can't find what gauge the wires are.

So far I have found some info on it but the dates are old so correct me if it is out of date and wrong.

24 pin - 18 AWG
Fan cable - 24 AWG
Mobo connectors - 26 AWG (assume this to be front panel switches, audio, usb etc)

I assume that molex, sata power, 8 pin mobo, and gpu cables are 18 awg too?

Any and all help on this appreciated :)

Greboth.

It'll vary from psu to psu and wire to wire. Just looking at the 24 pin you'll probably find 2 or 3 different sizes. Still, it'd probably be fine to go with 18 awg for most psu wiring though as lead lengths are short and voltage drop won't be much of a factor.

Most of the wiring will have it's size stamped or printed in the cable anyway, along with it's ul number so you can simply note that and use similar/identical spec wiring.

I am cheating slightly with the cable and braiding extensions for the most part. I feel stupid now though, never thought to actually check the wires themselves. Just checked what I can, the 24 and 8 pin extensions I have here to braid are all 18awg and all the fan cables and front panel I can see are 26. If every other wire I want to braid is labelled this job just got a lot easier, thanks tealc.

According to Hardware Secrets, 18 AWG is the standard for the power supply wires, and some beefier PSUs use 16 AWG.
