My wife needs something that , she can use while working to view her emails and open word docs etc for review.

I've shown her netbooks , but she thinks they are to large. Does any one still make good PDA's and if so which are best?

the last few o2 XDA's I've had have been pretty good. Currently got an XDA Orbit 2, it's pretty quick, not too big with semi decent battery life and runs windows mobile 6.1. I use mine for work email and tasks mainly as well as my main phone

Alternative, what about an iPhone? I'm sure they can read .doc, .xls, .pdf etc

If it's just a PDA your after ,check out the For Sales sections on some of the forums.I've just picked up a Dell Axim x30 recently , very fast little PDA and very cheaply priced .Runs on WM2003 SE which is dated nowadays ,but still does pocket excel , word , notes etc .The x30 has BT & wireless and seems pretty fast on the net compared to some PDA's I've owned.I've just put TomTom on it using a BT GPS ,so it's a good all rounder .Yes,theres lots of bargains to be had, most people are selling their stand alone PDA's in favour of a smartphone or iphone type gadget.

I like the Ipaq 214 personally. Big VGA screen, decent CPU, plenty of RAM, capacious battery and good connectivity for a non-smartphone device.

A bit pricey new, although they have been around for a while so second hand might be viable.

The 114 was allegedly pretty good as well and is more pocketable, though lacks things like the VGA screen.

Used to be a Palm fanboy but they have not made a new standalone PDA in a long time.

Depends what you want to use it for tbh. I find quite a few uses for mine, though I do sometimes find myself wishing for an internet connection when there is no WiFi around.

Not sure about the current range as I've not shopped for a PDA for a while but is seems to me that smartphone type models compromise too much on the PDA side of things. For one thing, there is just no contest between the 4" screen on the 214 and the smaller ones on most smartphones I've seen. For another, historically at least, smartphones make significant compromises in processing power.

There is also the matter of cost.

i've had a few of the dell's (x3, x30, x50v) and they were all good but the x50v was the best (big shock there :D) and have ad a couple of the htc's (s620, orbit 1 and touch hd) and i'm currently using the touch hd as my mobile, i even used it to check posts and reply to posts on this very forum when i was stuck at a party :D oh and an awesome screen that's great for you tube and video's (tv shows/movies ect)

it really depends on your budget and what you want it to do

As I've said ,there's lots of bargains out there .I've just picked up another Dell , a X51v ,the high spec one .It came with WM5 but now has the WM6.1 ROM loaded and what a difference .What a nice PDA for being an old model .Really fast and a great screen ,makes a good satnav too. Check out the sales and your bound to pick up a bargain.

I've struggled ......................................

...How does the x50v compare with a Ipaq 214

Not sure ,dont know anything about the Ipaq ,but I own 2 axims ,both 624Mhz models , x30 ....WM2003 ,X51v ...now WM6.1 and they fly .Both excellent as satnavs and good with the interent. I really like the x30 ,lightweight ,good battery life ,nice feel to it ,but the x51v is something else .
I've just seen a DELL AXIM X50 for sale on another site in excellent condition for only £50. bargain....
