PDF slow viewing in iMac

My parents have been going on at me for ages about why scrolling through PDFs on their iMac is such a painfully slow process and I honestly have no idea what's going on.

Their iMac now has 12GB of Ram but if you open a PDF within Safari it is just ridiculously slow?

Is this a common problem with Macs?

I've updated everything but can't fix it.

are they using any 3rd party software? even adobe reader? as it should be removed. mac osx supports reading pdfs via both preview and safari without any addition software.

Its worth clearing the cache/temp files for both if they are not.
