I have been offered a PEAK Radeon X700 Super 512MB GDDR2 PCI-E Graphics Card from a friend of mine to put in a new system im building.

The system is a AMD 3500+ and 1GB of pc400 ram.

What I want to know is, are the above graphics cards any good, I play games like SOF2 and do a lot of online gaming.

I dont want to spen £100's of pounds on a graphics card as it will be a waste of money.

The above apeals to me due to large memory and it comes with some decent add on's liek TV out and other stuff.

I have tried to find some reviews on this with no luck, so anything you could tel me about this card would be good, and also would it slow down my system when built if I put it in?

Thanks for help

It really depends how much he's charging. Don't be fooled by the 512mb of RAM on it, that much is useless on a card like an X700. Any graphics card that comes in a retail box will have TV Out etc too, so don't use that to judge.

So in conclusion, it's not bad, but it's not great either. Plus I bet your mate is charging a fair bit for it due to the 512mb RAM.

if it is <£70 go for it

No don't!

Its not even an X700 Pro, which basically means its a bit slower than a STD 9800, approx 9700 Pro performance.

You want to go for something like the - XFX GeForce PCX6600 Extreme XXX Edition 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (PVT43-PUDS7) (GX-058-XF) at just £76 Inc. VAT

That offers 6600 GT performance with all the latest features too, a much faster card and brand new, not second hand.

Agree to the above. That X700 is the standard version. I.E slower thna the Pro. Steer clear and get a 6600 or 6800LE or even save a little more for an X800GTO16 :S.

Yes I also forgot to mention the 6800 XT from XFX they are only £79 +VAT and are very very quick cards. :)

thanks for that guys,

I would be paying £30 for the card. Last card I had was TI4200 but my mates say Radeon are very good and I have been inpressed with the Radeon cards.

Want somthing that will play SOF2 & medal of honour on line games. Also want to be able to play some games of a simular type if any come out in the next 12 months or so.

This will be on a 17" or 19" tft not yet bought ans want to run above games on top quality settings.

Any more suggestions, can this be clocked and I have read some other posts, that say you can unlock cards?????

For £30 its worth it! Hell if you don't buy it give me his number. ;)

Edit: Although I notice in your reply that you say you want to play games that are similar to SOF2 that will be coming out in the next 6-12 months at 1280x1024 (thats the res of a 17or19" tft). Now the x700 will NOT be able to push a new game at that resolution in anything more than low-medium settings.

If you want something that will push new games at 1280x1024 in medium to high settings then you will need at least an x800gto 256MB which are £105 currently.

Will have to get that card from him asap. This will do me for now as I can upgrade in 18months time as it been a pci-e card.

Main thing it will do a decent job and I wont break the bank or the g/friend will kill me, lol.

a other option is a AGP 9800pro from auction site. I know for upgrade the PCI-e is better but what is the difference in the above 2 cards performance?

Cheers guys
