I use the bike around town. i don't even own a pair of cycling shoes. i understand why they they would scare you because they are restrictive. but for longer journey and especially in wet conditions they can be helpful.
I agree, but you get all the same benefits with clipless but the added advantage of being able to get your feet out quickly. Especially helpful in stop/start city traffic.
I had some clipped pedals which looked like this. They were quite light and not too bulky but I didnt use them much so I cant comment on performance.
