Hi Folks,

More help please! im in the process of decorating a room and pretty much everything is determined to be a PITA!

I noticed a bit of flaking paint and after taking a scraping to the offending flakes, i noticed it wasnt flakes, but actual peeling paint, like literally peeling off. This room was last paint at the very least 10 years ago, and its a warm room. The paint im peeling off was a vinyl silk, underneath it looks like a matt finish.

My plan is to wash it down with sugar soap and repaint, but now im thinking if i should primer it 1st, I was planning to use some cova plus matt white as a final finish.

Any tips or ideas why it peeled?

 
Night mare I had a problem like this, used a steam wallpaper stripper and washed the remaining paint off well and all was good. Nicotine or wallpaper paste if it was papered at some time would be my guess as at what caused this.
 
The ceiling had been painted many many years ago originally, and then this vinyl silk had been painted on top around 10 years ago or so.
 
I'd use an electric sander and give it a good keying then paint again with some decent matt paint.

One thing a lot of people do is buy some ultra cheap paint for the first coat. i have even seen it recommended to do that on here. The first coat is as important as any other as that is what binds it to the plaster, so get something decent like Johnstones or Leyland trade etc and just water the first coat down.

I had a similar problem but the paint was cracking and breaking off in little bits. I had to scrape it all off with a razor scraper. Painted it properly with some decent paint and it has been fine ever since.

Did you steam the wallpaper off?

If someone has used magic pva and it gets wet this happens. That's why you shouldn't use pva.
 
Yes it was steamed off, thankfully ive got it all off. How much should I water down the 1St coat. Im using cova plus. Will 50:50 be sufficient?
